Award-winning Business

Sign and be ‘Heard’ is an exciting business, which aims to have staff trained in British Sign Language (BSL). This will enhance communication with Deaf users of their first language.

Linda van Heerden and Marsie Stuart received acclaim  when their efforts were not only recognised externally, but attained a “Highly Commended” award in November of 2008. This came under the category of promoting Equality and Diversity. (Scotland’s Colleges Annual Awards 2008).

It was this event that inspired Linda and Marsie to set this up as an independent business, giving them the freedom to expand throughout Scotland. It also means that:

  • Flexible classes can be offered to shift workers where and when desired.

  • Tailor-made courses can be adapted to suit the individuals or business.

  • On site training is offered when preferred.

  • Voluntary post-course refreshers are part of the package.

  • Only highly trained lecturing staff with relevant teaching qualifications and experience will be considered for working with Sign and be ‘Heard’.

Linda and Marsie will continue to work for the enrichment of BSL through staff training. Their work will also address the requirements of DED (Disability Equality Duty), which states that ‘employers should encourage people to attend Sign Language Classes.’

Our Deaf community is already enjoying the connection between hearing people in various walks of life who have already completed courses throughout Scotland, from as far north as Elgin, down to Dumfries.  Apart from staff training, delivered on-site in prisons, fire stations, supermarkets, schools, Sign and be 'Heard' holds evening classes for the general public. By learning this British language, it also encourages employment for Deaf individuals, who would like to work in an environment where others can communicate with them.

It is indeed a privilege to make a difference to the lives of others within our communities.
